LANDMARK CARNIVAL 2010
The SWFL had mixed results with the Landmark Carnival for 2010. The League Team played tremendous football on Thursday July 8 to defeat Avon by 83 points to head the Landmark Table after day 1 results, followed by Peel, LSWFL, UGSFL, GFL, Avon.
It was on Day 2 Friday July 9 that the SWFL became aware that Day 2 would be a straight knock out semi-finals with 1 v 4 & 2 v 3. Once again the UGSFL proved too strong for the SWFL in terrible wet conditions at Fremantle Oval to prevail by 15 points & book their place in the Landmark Grand Final to face Peel FL on Sunday.
UGSFL once again showed that they know how to win the major games with a come from behind win over Peel by 5 points giving UGSFL 6 of the last 7 Landmark League Champions Titles.
The SWFL Colts after an indifferent start on Thursday July 8 when they lost 2 of their 3 round robin games & giving their Coaching staff some deep concerns & thinking of alternate strategies.
Friday July 9 saw the Colts show their true form with a comprehensive 83 point win over GSFL Colts at Lathlain Park to book their place in the Grand Final for Saturday July 10.
Saturday July 10 saw the SWFL Colts jump out early to take a 4 goal lead at quarter time against Regional Districts which they never surrendered eventually running out 43 point winners & claimed their 7th straight Championship win & 10th overall.
The SWFL remains committed to the Landmark Championship & will look to reclaim the title of the champion league in 2011.

Peel Cavalier Colts v SWFL Colts
The Interleague Colts Game played on Friday Night June 18 at McLarty Oval in Pinjarra was not a good result for SWFL with Peel Cavalier winning the Alcoa Cup making it a hat trick of wins over the SWFL Colts.
In wet conditions it was the Peel Cavaliers that adapted the best to defeat the SWFL Colts by 27 points.
The SWFL started quickly but missed early chances to put goals on the board, Peel boys worked their way back into the game late in the first quarter to kick two vital goals when goals were hard to come by.
It was Peel that grabbed the advantage in the 2nd quarter to kick two goals & keep the SWFL goalless to half time to lead by 22 points.
Any expected fight back was deflated quickly with Peel Cavaliers kicking first two goals of the 3rd qtr and putting the game out of reach with torrential rain the order of the quarter.
With the rain abating the SWFL boys to their credit fought out the last quarter kicking 4.4 to 1.2 whether it was the rain stopping or Peel easing up is debatable but the players showed something like their true form with run on football in the last quarter and with more accuracy could have made for a tight finish. The SWFL Colts focus is now on the Landmark Championships starting July 8 at Claremont Oval.

SWFL COLTS V PEEL CAVALIER COLTS Friday June 18 MCLARTY OVAL PINJARRA
SWFL Colts will endeavour to win back the Alcoa Cup that the Peel Cavalier have held since 2008. Newly appointed SWFL Colts Coach Salv Mileto is keen to have a strong team on the ground to challenge Peel Colts who recently have been added to the WACFL Landmark Carnival for 2010. It will be interesting to see if both sides field their strongest teams for this clash in view of the impending Landmark Carnival only 3 weeks away. I am sure the players would welcome a strong contingent from the SW to provide loud support for this challenge. The venue has been changed from Rushton Park to McLarty Oval & not as shown on Fixture Cards. Lets hope the players can bring the cup back to its SW home.

PETER BELL for BATTENS BATTLE 2010 Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. Batten disease is not contagious nor, at this time, preventable. To date, it has always been fatal. BCE Surveying together with HBL Football Club are uniting to help raise much needed funds for Batten disease by hosting the inaugural "Battens Battle" at the Brunswick Showgrounds on Saturday 6th March 2010. This will be your chance to see your favourite past stars from Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles. Coached by Daniel Gilmore and captained by Peter Bell, Dockers will have a strong team including Matthew Carr, Shaun McManus, Troy Cook and Heath Black. Steve Maloxos will coach an experienced West Coast Eagles team, captained by Dean Kemp and including Peter Wilson, David Wirrpanda, Dean Irving and Dwayne Lamb. Gates will open at 1.30pm for the intra-club battle between the South West Juniors. A clinic will be provided at 5pm for children up to the age of 12. The "Battens Battle" should kick off at 6pm. Entry is $10 per adult, $5 per kid, $5 per pensioner, $20 for a family pass. Kids under 10 are free. An auction will follow immediately after the game and will include the auction of the guernsey's worn during the game. Battens t-shirts will be available for $20 which will be the perfect canvas for getting autographs. Brunswick Showgrounds are licensed until midnight, so plan your safe transport early.

Kevin Lynn Honoured as Inaugural Life Member of South West Regional Football Development Council
Omodei appointed New Chairman of South West RFDC
FORMER State Cabinet Minister and Liberal Party leader, Paul Omodei, has taken over the leadership of the South West Regional Football Development Council after Kevin Lynn stepped down as Chairman after six successful years.
Omodei has a great passion for the game with strong links to the Lower South West Football League and in particular with Southerners Football Club in Pemberton. Born in Manjimup, he attended St Joseph's School in Pemberton and later became a Manjimup Shire Councillor, serving as Shire President for four years. He progressed to State politics with the Liberal Party and was responsible for portfolios including Local Government, Water Resources, Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs, Disability Services, Forest Products, Emergency Services and Regional Development before announcing his resignation last year.
The task ahead for Omodei as SWRFDC Chairman will be to continue the successful introduction of initiatives outlined in the 2008 South West Future Directions report and work in conjunction with leagues and competitions at all levels to achieve these outcomes.
His experience and influence in the political arena and strong business background will equip Omodei to lead the South West football community into a strong position for the future and carry on the outstanding work of the SWRFDC and outgoing Chairman Kevin Lynn.
Lynn, who is a South West Football League life member and one of the most well known and respected figures within local sporting circles, signed off on his last meeting as Chairman last Friday, November 27, where he was also appointed as the first SWRFDC Life Member.
Ray Pulford, Umpire’s Coach and current SWRFDC member said Kevin was renowned for his dedication, commitment and service to the Council and football throughout the region for over 23 years.
“Kevin has done so much for the South West League, particularly putting forward new ideas, new law changes and also drafting up proposals for grants to assist umpiring, indigenous players, AFL matches and WAFL matches,” Pulford said.
WAFC Country Development Manager, Dale Ballantyne, echoed Pulford’s comments, saying Lynn had stepped up when the WAFC was looking to take its football model to regional WA.
“He has held his position as Chairman of the SWRFDC and also President of the SW Football League with distinction and has overseen a number of changes which will hold Australian Rules Football in great stead as the Bunbury and Lower South West regions continue to grow into the future,” Ballantyne said.
South West Regional Development Manager, Shane Atherton, said the South West had been a strong football region for many years thanks to wonderful volunteers such as Kevin Lynn and now Paul Omodei.
“I am delighted the South West region will have another very well regarded Chairman in Paul, a man who has a passion for the game and also extensive networks within the region and also the State. There are many exciting projects and opportunities looming for football followers in the South West and Paul’s leadership will be of great benefit during these dynamic times,” he said.

SWFL PREPARE LANDMARK LAUNCH FOR 2009
The South West Football League was formed in 1957 when the Bunbury-Collie Football League became the South West Football League. The SWFL administrative office is situated at Hands Oval in Bunbury. For information, news, the latest scores and what’s happening in the league visit our website at www.swfl.com.au. The league has participated in every Championship since its inception and played 119 matches, winning 87 and won 17 titles from 31 grand final appearances. Mark Bayliss, former South Fremantle and Collingwood player and current coach of the South Bunbury Football Club will be at the helm of the League side in 2009. Mark has gathered a support panel which includes Mick Grasso, former Swan Districts player and Sandover Medallist and Tony Strano, the 1997 Carnival Fairest and Best and Carnival Allstar who will act as runner. Mark and the team are determined to win back to back Championships and make it title number 18. The Colts, current title holders, and winners of eight championships since 2000 will again be coached by Jason Reid. Reid is now in his seventh year as Colts coach and has set his young team the challenge of maintaining the winning streak and claim title number eight. The SWFL has again become a ten team league with the inclusion of the Harvey Bulls, coached by former South Fremantle player Ned Fimmano. The Bulls were formed in 1994 and until this year played in the Peel Football League. The other nine teams are Harvey Brunswick Leschenault, Collie Eagles, Augusta Margaret River, Eaton Boomers, Donnybrook, Busselton, Bunbury, South Bunbury and the 2008 premiers Carey Park who are unbeaten so far in 2009 and on track to claim their fourth premiership in the decade.

Despite the weather the players put on a good display of skills but it was the intensity with the way the Peel Cavaliers approached the game that was the difference. The inclement conditions made for straight through body contact football which saw some thrills & lots of spills understandably in extreme conditions. Peel Cavalier were prepared to go & kicking with a strong breeze got the jump on the South West Boys for a 29 points to 6 points quarter time lead which the South West never really recovered. The South West showed continual persistence to keep coming back at the Cavaliers but it is difficult to make up for a start against a talented line up. Focal points in attack allowed for the Cavaliers to play long & direct football with Ryan McKinlay 6 goals being a telling blow for the visitors. The Peel Cavalier Colts retained the Alcoa Cup after winning a tight game at Rushton Park in 2008, first time the Cavaliers have gone back to back which was not unnoticed by either parties. The rivalry for the Alcoa Cup is increasing in intensity with the Peel supporters, support staff out numbering those from the South West. With the South West losing in consecutive years may see his match receive more focus from the South West for the re-match at Rushton Park in 2010.

HARVEY BULLS IN SWFL Harvey Bulls have been admitted to SWFL on a 8-1 vote taken by SWFL Clubs at AGM on December 4. Officials & Coaches of the Harvey Football Club are delighted with the outcome. The Bulls made a submission to join SWFL back in 1993 but with 10 clubs competing at the time the submission was defeated. With the competition reducing to a 9 club competition the time was right for the Bulls to make a further application. Colin Brand (Vice President) commented that Harvey is a country based town & belong within a country competition. Travel was a factor in making a submission to join SWFL as the feeling as the Peel Football League is developing north of Mandurah. In addition the Harvey Bulls Junior Club participates in the Bunbury & Districts Junior Association, joining the SWFL helps to re-align the club & gives a more direct association with its junior teams. The Bulls have been successful in the Peel Football League playing in 6 League Grand Finals & winning 3 Premierships. Colin commented they know that the challenge is before them but the Club is determined to meet that challenge & have appointed well known former South Fremantle Footballer Ned Fimmano as League Coach. The Bulls expect to be competitive & have received unprecedented support from the Harvey Town & surrounding areas in making this decision. Local clubs are happy to dispense with the bye & have a long season reduced.

Peel Cavalier Colts deprived the SW Colts of keeping a hold of the Alcoa Cup.
Last Friday night at Rushton Park a good crowd watched a high quality game between evenly matched teams albeit in slippery conditions, which made maintaining ones feet a necessity.
A powerful 3rd quarter from Peel saw the game tighten up and after an arm wrestle in the last Peel kicked a goal on the siren to claim a seven point win
The SW will be keen to have a rematch at Hands Oval in 2009 before their home fans to re calim the Cup.
This game is seen as an important prelude to Landmark Carnival starting Thursday July 10th 2008.

SWFL Landmark Coaching Appointments for 2008 SWFL League Landmark Coach for 2008 - Mark Bayliss Mark has extensive experince playing for South Fremantle in WAFL and Collingwood in the old VFL. Mark has experience in Coaching Harvey Bulls in Peel Football League to a Premiership and coached HBL to a Grand Final in 2006 to fall agonisingly short of Carey Park by 4 points. He brings a wealth of experience to SWFL Landmark position, and is determined to have SWFL League "A" lift the Land mark trophy for the first time in 4 years. SWFL Colts "A" Landmark Coach for 2008 - Jason Reid (see picture) Jason has coached the SWFL Colts "A" side to six straight Landmark titles and is keen to keep that trend going. Meticulous planning has been the corner stone of the Colts "A" success. There has been speculation that SWFL should fiel a Colts side in the WAFL competition - this is still subject to much debate, and the impact on local competition needs to be taken into account.

Highlights of the round were • The previously unbeaten South Bunbury was beaten by Centrals. • It was announced that South Western Times writer Ross Elliot would travel to Kalgoorlie to report on the game and that radio station 6TZ would broadcast the game back to Bunbury. • South Bunbury centre half forward Ted Hosking took a one vote lead over Terry Howlett when he polled another three votes. • R. Walker of Donnybrook was unavailable for the trip to Kalgoorlie, O’Brien of Centrals injured his knee and the 1956 Hayward Medallist had a foot injury and all three were ruled out. • C. Britten of Railways and R. Trezise of Bunbury were called in to the squad while it was expected Coverley would not be replaced. • Bunbury had a complete form reversal to win in brilliant fashion with seven regular league players missing. The promoted juniors did well and Trezise kicked six goals. After level on 6.11 at half time Bunbury booted 9.6 to 3.4 in the second half. • Pat Pike was judged second best on ground kicking a bundle of goals after being considered a surprise omission from the combined side. • The player featured in the South Western Times was Colin Holtzman, a thirty year old dental technician who played for Carey Park. He had rarely been in a Carey Park team that had beaten South Bunbury but was confident of victory in the game to come with South missing six players in Kalgoorlie and Carey Park only one.

At 21 he was in his fourth season and following his efforts as an eighteen year old at centre half back for a carnival in 1954 had been receiving offers to join both Perth and Claremont. He was considered a certainty for the trip to Kalgoorlie and was selected.

50 YEARS ON
MAY 5 1957
Round 2 of the 1957 season • Bunbury 19.16 130 defeated Busselton 17.14 116 at Bunbury • Harvey Brunswick 12.12 84 defeated Carey Park 8.6 54 at Harvey • Mines Rovers 14.14 98 defeated Railways 9.10 64 at Collie • South Bunbury 14.21 defeated Donnybrook 8.8 56 at Donnybrook
Highlights of the round included • Donnybrook centre half forward John Williams kicked from a long way out and the ball landed on top of the goalpost and burst. • Ted Hosking gained two votes against Donnybrook to go to six votes and an early lead in the Hume Footballer of the year award. • Despite losing by 49 points Donnybrook players polled the four and three votes against South Bunbury. Centreman Bob Walker polled the four and R.C (Bob) Howlett for a grand game in defence received three votes. The best player list in the newspaper showed T. Howlett as the Dons second best and the following week he was credited with the three votes to go to the lead in the award as the only player to poll in the first three rounds. • Bill Alderman, father of Test cricketer Terry, umpired the game at Collie with another famous umpire Len Gardner in action at Bunbury. • Bunbury got the better of the free kick tally with 34 to Busselton’s 21. This was the only game in the newspaper scoreboard to show the statistics. Busselton outmarked Bunbury 81 to 68. • Ross Elliott found it hard to give the votes in the game at Bunbury as no player did well for four quarters but gave the four votes to Ross Wallrodt for a top defensive effort on Brian Pross. Busselton full forward managed to get three votes for his nine goal effort at full forward for the reigning premiers. • Bunbury was once again challenged as the best attendance town with a near record crowd at Donnybrook. • Round 2 set an attendance record for the league.

South West Football History.
In 1957 a change of name saw the beginning of the South West National Football League. The vibrant Bunbury-Collie, League formed in 1953 changed its name to become the South West National Football League at the commencement of the 1957 football season. The Bunbury-Collie League was formed in March of 1953 at a meeting held in Collie with the following Clubs participating: · Bunbury Railways · Collie Railways · Pastimes · Mines Rovers · Collie Centrals · South Bunbury · Donnybrook The foundation President was Reg Earl of Collie with Mr J Richards as the League's first Secretary. The following season East Busselton and West Busselton joined the League to make a nine team competition. The following year, 1958 the Busselton teams amalgamated to form one team. In 1956 Harvey Brunswick joining the flourishing League and two sides underwent name changes. Pastimes became Carey Park and the Bunbury Railways became Bunbury. The newly formed South West National Football League commenced the 1957 season by introducing a Seconds (Reserves) competition with a new club Boyanup-Capel being admitted to the League and playing only in the Seconds competition. Two years later they entered a League side and became a fully fledged member of the SWNFL playing League and Seconds. In its foundation year the League adopted League colours of Green and Gold, colours they have continued with to the present day. In its first year the SWNFL introduced a Provident Fund which has been maintained to the present and one that was at the time considered a first in Country Football in Western Australia. A year later the League introduced a players Accident Fund designed to assist players who through injury suffered loss of work. The scheme continued until 2001 when mandatory players insurance was introduced nationally. The accident fund first commenced in 1958 and still operates to day by paying players insurance and offering a supplementary payment to injured players. The foundation President of the SWFL was P C Payne and T Mason was the League's first secretary /treasurer. The halcyon days of the fifties and sixties saw the new League grow and flourish and set new standards in country football. These times saw football as the dominant winter sport with large crowds attending matches and the community giving great support to the National game. The League had inherited a first class weekly match programme known as the Football Budget from the Bunbury-Collie League and production of that has been continued every season since 1955. Football and local community radio enjoyed a wonderful and successful partnership with Radio 6tz-Ci of the then Nicholson's Broadcasting providing colourful match commentaries and weekly football shows. A sign of the times in 1990's saw the local community radio station turn its back on football when the corporations that acquired local stations took the local out of radio and settled for national programming. Match broadcasts ceased in 1994.
1960 saw the League in dispute with the Bunbury Council over ground charges. As a result no football was played in Bunbury that year and the Grand Final was played at Brunswick. The following season football returned to Bunbury grounds at Hands Oval and the Recreation Ground
In 1961 the League became a nine team competition when Collie Railways and Collie Centrals amalgamated to form the Collie Football Club .The SWNFL admitted Augusta Margaret River to the competition in 1966 and returned to a ten team competition. At the end of the 2001 season Collie and Mines Rovers amalgamated citing player numbers in Collie as contributing to their demise. Mines Rovers one of the oldest Clubs in the region had been formed in 1904 as Cardiff and adopted the name Mines Rovers in 1909 ceased playing in the SWFL at the end of the 2001 season. The newly formed Club from the amalgamation was Collie Eagles who played their first match in 2002.
Many of the League's prestigious player awards were already established prior to the formation of the South West National League in 1957 and most have been carried forward to the present day. The Hayward Medal donated by a local Bunbury store, Thomas Hayward had first been presented in the Bunbury Football Association in 1946 and had been part of the Bunbury Collie League .When the company was sold the Medal continued under several sponsorships as the store changed ownership several times... It has now sponsored by the Hayward family who have continued the rich traditional the Medal has earnt as the League fairest and best award. The Medal was first counted publicly in 1977 and for a short time the count was broadcasted by the local radio station. The Reserves Fairest and Best was first awarded in 1957 and has maintained since its inception by the Times group. The fairest and best in the Grand Final is another longstanding medal that was first awarded in 1956 with sponsorship from the Pike family of Collie.
The South West League has participated in all Country Championships since the sixties and has built an impressive record. The first Country Championship title was won in 1970 and the league has won sixteen championships and been runners up on twelve occasions from 1965 to 2006. During the fifties, sixties and seventies the SWFL engaged in many inter League matches and built up an imposing winning record. Despite the League's success and commitment to inter league matches clubs and many players did not always fully support then concept and by the nineties they had virtually disappeared from the football calendar. The SWFL entered a Colts team in the Country Championship in 2000 after being unwilling to participate in the first two Colts Championships. The League has achieved a remarkable Grand Final record having won six of the seven years they have participated. The only Grand Final loss was in 2003 when the team was disqualified for playing an unregistered player.
Football continued to grow and prosper into the seventies and this saw all Clubs build impressive Club rooms with licensed premises. Much of the development and building came from Club fundraising and volunteer labour and indeed was a credit to the Clubs of that time. Augusta Margaret River had the distinction of being the first fully licensed football club in the country. While nine of the ten Football Clubs had licensed premises on their home ground Boyanup Capel Dardanup owned the Boyanup Hotel which they sold around the time the Club relocated to Eaton. The SWFL itself was part of the building programme and the League built an office and meeting rooms at Hands Oval which were opened in 1980. Some four years later the building was named the Bob Black Pavilion in honour of long serving President Bob Black.
When Zoning was introduced by the WANFL in 1970 the SWFL were reluctant and hesitant partners in the scheme. South West League clubs were zoned to East Perth and Swan Districts when Zoning commenced but over the years restructuring has seen a number of changes. For some time West Perth Football Club was part of the Zoning scheme in the South West. More recently Peel Thunder was aligned to the SWFL and West Perth re boundaried elsewhere. Much of the young talent from the SWFL as result found their way to East Perth and Swan Districts and in recent years to Peel Thunder.
In 1977 the SWNFL introduced a Colts competition. Not all Clubs have maintained full participation throughout the years with Donnybrook, Collie and Boyanup Capel Dardanup not fielding a team every season. Augusta Margaret River missed fielding a side in the first year but has participated every season since 1978. The League had conducted a Thirds competition between 1962 and 1964 but due to lack of support by Clubs and lack of full participation by all Clubs it was disbanded. The Colts Fairest and Best medal was first sponsored by the Collie Mail and is now the Rural Press Medal.
In the early years of the SWNFL all League games were umpired by WAFL umpires who travelled each Sunday from Perth to officiate. Local field umpires were appointed to Seconds matches only. Goal and Boundary umpires for the most part were appointed at Club level. Despite many submissions to introduce local umpires to league ranks the League and Clubs rejected the requests. A local Umpires Association and panel were formed in 1977 and gradually local umpires were recognized. In 1977 the first local umpire to be appointed in the then one umpire system to officiate in a League game was Geoff Gibbs. The following year the first local umpire to umpire a final round match was appointed, when Kevin Nettleton officiated. By 1986 all League games were umpired by local umpires. What a far cry umpiring is today from the 1960's when the League needed to appoint just four umpires each week under the one umpire system and Clubs being responsible for goal and boundary umpires. To day the League appoints umpires to all areas in all grades and requires seventy two umpires each week.
From the mid eighties onward football in the SWFL faced many testing times. The introduction of the National competition through the AFL and the entry of the West Coast Eagles to the national competition in 1987 and later the Fremantle Football Club had severe repercussions to grass roots football. The SWNFL saw a considerable decline in crowd attendances and a waning of interest in local football. While the National competition attracted huge interest and following particularly through television the same interest and following did not transfer to community football. Both the League and Clubs were faced with a declining income and support which put great pressure on football administrators to counter the decline. Innovative fixturing became necessary and several variations were tried and considered. Saturday football was tried with only moderate success and most Clubs were not supportive of the concept. Night football became a viable alternative and the first Club to install lighting was South Bunbury at Hands Oval in 1995. Harvey Brunswick Leschanault followed with lights at Brunswick and Busselton at Sir Stewart Bovell Park. While not embraced by all clubs night football has proven a success in attracting crowds and offering an alternative for players
In 1991 the League dropped the National from its name and became the South West Football League. The WAFL had suffered dramatically from the National Competition and it sought answers to rejuvenate its competition. In the early nineties the SWFL were encouraged to apply for entry to the WAFL with a team from the South West and this was met with divided views. A submission for entry was made but rejected in 1993 and the proposal lost momentum.
These testing times saw football under pressure from the changing demographics of the region, the influence of twelve hour shifts to many industrial and mining sites, expanded retail trading and the growth of other alternative sports. All added pressure on Clubs to sustain their traditional player base and volunteer base. The changing lifestyle of the times saw Clubs having to manage the challenges and look at new ways to develop and grow.
Throughout this period the League provided a variety of football to the South West. In April of 1984 the first WAFL fixture for premiership points was played outside of the Metropolitan area, at Hands Oval between East Perth and Swan Districts attracting a crowd estimated at seven thousand. There followed AFL scratches matches at Hands Oval between the Eagles and Adelaide, at Margaret River between the Eagles and Adelaide and at Hands Oval Fremantle and Saint Kilda. In 1994 the SWFL were hosts to the prestigious National Youth Competition, the Commonwealth Bank Cup. Ten years later in 2004 the SWFL played hosts to the National Country Championships. Several WAFL Enrichment matches have been hosted within the League at Bunbury, Busselton, Collie and Donnybrook all earning the SWFL praise for their facilities and organization. In 1999 the SWFL entered the WAFL Pre Season competition, the Governors Cup and performed creditably without winning a match. The South West League side was coached by former Claremont coach, Darrell Panizza.
The South West Football League has in fifty seasons had a very stable and settled administration. Since 1957 the SWFL have only six Presidents and eight secretary/mangers. In 1997 the League moved to employ a fulltime General Manager a move that has been very successful and productive. The League's Tribunal Chairman for the past forty years has been held by the Fisher family, the late Charles Fisher and son Kelvin, both Life Members of the SWFL.
The South West Football League will celebrate its fifth anniversary year in 2007.
